WELCOME BACK TO the fold, XCOM 2, that fold being the single most popular and temporally continuous gaming platform in history.
Yes, alien-sleuthing strategy puzzler XCOM 2 is officially a thing, which given the uncompromised stupendousness of Firaxis’ XCOM rethink a few years ago should be heartening enough. But I’m most chuffed to hear it’s going to play on the one gaming platform that’s been with us since well before the original X-COM: UFO Defense emerged back in 1994:XCOM 2 will land on Windows, OS X and Linux PCs—exclusively—in November 2015.
Well, “exclusively” for 2015, anyway. There’s nothing in 2K’s press release to indicate it’s exclusive-forever. The original XCOM shipped simultaneously on consoles, then made its way to mobile. Given that, I’d wager we’ll see XCOM 2 head off-PC eventually.
But let’s relish this PC firstie, because really, how often does that happen anymore? By contrast, players had to wait a year and a half for Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V to hit PC.
I have no idea whether XCOM 2‘s going to be any good, only that it’s set 20 years after XCOM in an “aliens won” future (so something like V the 1983 miniseries meets Fallen Skies). I’m just sort of quietly pleased to see an IP as vital as XCOM boldly going where too few franchises have gone for the better part of a decade.
